The summer months bring activities, family vacations, BBQs, and many fun summer evenings. But during the day, the heat from the sun can be oppressive. Using cool sheets, adding AC, and eating simple meals are a few of the ways you can stay cool and relaxed in your home during the summer.
Use Cool Sheets
Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health and overall happiness. Sleeping when overheated is difficult and does not give you much rest. Consider using cool sheets to promote cooler body temperatures while sleeping. Lightweight cotton, like Egyptian cotton, or linens are breathable materials that help promote ventilation and airflow. Stay away from satins, silk, or polyester sheets that trap heat and will keep you warm in bed. Additionally, you can prevent night sweats by spraying your sheets down with a spray bottle, so they are damp and cool when you get into bed at night.
Because the structure of your home is enclosed, it very easily traps heat. If you do not already have an air conditioning system, it is wise to get one installed. Air conditioning will help circulate and cool the air in your home. You can choose from several types of HVAC systems. If you already have one, your HVAC system will occasionally need maintenance to keep it running and cooling your home efficiently.
Eat Simple Meals
When you cook for extended periods of time with a crockpot or meal where your oven is on, the heat from your appliances radiates into the rest of the house. When it is warm outside, it is best to make simple meals that do not require very much appliance use. This will help keep the overall temperature in your home lower and easier to cool. Heavy meals also take more for the body to digest and during digestion, your internal body temperature will rise. Small, light, but frequent meals will keep you and your home much more comfortable.
The next time you experience a heatwave, plan activities in and outside of your home to make things more enjoyable. Water activities are great to cool you down and have a bit of fun while you’re at it. While at home, you can use cool sheets, add AC, and eat simple meals to weather the heatwave.
