To become a realtor, you must complete some sort of licensing program. These are required in each state and some licenses even carry over to other states. When getting your license, you can either follow an in-person licensing program or an online program.

In-Person Licensing Programs

As you decide what type of course to take, you might first consider the more traditional route. Taking an in-person course is very similar to a traditional classroom setting. One of the main benefits is you will be working with other students in person. This is helpful for socializing which can be an essential part of learning. You can have more discussions and be exposed to other ideas. This setting is also ideal for providing support as you work towards your license.

Additionally, a classroom setting is helpful for getting immediate feedback from the teacher. This is helpful for some learning styles. On the other hand, in-person courses are not as convenient when compared to online courses. Typically, they will take longer to complete which is difficult if you are eager to get your license. You need to meet at specific times and locations which might not work for everyone’s schedule. They can also be more expensive as well.

Online Licensing Programs

There are many benefits to doing an online licensing program. First of all, it is far more flexible. You can access the material when it best suits you and you can work at your own pace. This means you can take your time or get it done as quickly as possible. You don’t need to worry about meeting someone else’s schedule. The main drawback is the lack of face-to-face interaction with a teacher and fellow students. Additionally, online courses require you to be very self-motivated. This is especially important as it can become very boring to stare at a computer screen as you learn. You should also be aware of when your course was last updated. Licensing exams get updated yearly, which means your course could be outdated if it isn’t updated with similar regularity. You want to make sure your course will accurately prepare you for the exam.

The path you take to get your real estate license depends on your preferences and your learning style. Some people do better on their own and others work best in a group setting. Think critically about how you learn best and what will work well with your lifestyle as you make your decision.
