Mold can be scary. It’s hard to recognize and yet it can pose significant health risks to your family members and significant risks to your home’s value. Being aware of the areas in your home that have the greatest tendency to get moldy will help you prevent that mold from developing.

Bathrooms

Because bathrooms are often one of the moistest places in your home, mold tends to grow here the most. When it comes to preventing mold from growing in your bathroom, there are a variety of things you can do.

First, make sure that you and your family members have the habit of turning on the fan when they shower. This can help air circulation so that steam doesn’t stay stagnant in the bathroom. You should also be vigilant at watching for any discoloration on walls so that you can spot treat if necessary. Additionally, make sure to get into the habit of wiping away any sitting water.

HVAC

Another place where mold is common is in your HVAC. Mold can develop when there is too much moisture in your air ducts; this moisture creates a perfect environment for the mold to grow. And while it can sometimes be hard to spot at first, watching out for certain signs can help you recognize it.

Pay attention if you see any blackish discoloring on your HVAC units, if your air has a musty odor, or if you or loved ones start to have respiratory problems that you didn’t have before. It’s important to pay attention to these signs because mold can get out of hand quickly. Mold can often spread through your air ducts and into the whole HVAC system.

Refrigerator

Another place where mold is likely to grow is in your refrigerator. While mold in your fridge may seem less serious than mold growing in your bathroom or in your HVAC system, it can still have serious consequences.

When food starts to decompose and develops mold spores, those spores can get into the air and other food if not taken care of promptly. Ingesting moldy food can result in sickness including nausea or vomiting at best and serious food poisoning at worst.

Preventing mold can seem difficult sometimes. Mold can seem so evasive and hard to spot. Following some of these suggestions among others can get you off to a good start.
